Psychology - The only psychology book that will change you

By Rick Thomas

Your presupposition is the thought you have before you have a thought. It is your starting point. It is your pre-thought. This means before a situation comes into your life, your God-centered presupposition is there, ready, and prepared to interpret that circumstance. You already know how you are going to filter your life circumstance because God is the fountain head from which everything else will spring forth.

The stronger your God-centered presupposition, which you could call your faith, the more battle ready you will be when negative events come into your life. But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. – James 1:14 (EVS). When a trial comes and you are easily defeated, discouraged, or drawn away by sinfully responding to that trial, then you know your God-centered presupposition is weak and needs to be upgraded.

A system of thought - Let’s suppose you are battle ready. The LORD is your fortifying pre-thought and Christianity is your world view–the filter through which all of life is interpreted. If so, you now need a system of thought that will bring careful interpretation to what is going on in your life.

Psychology is the most accurate way to think about the human condition. It is a Bible-implied word. Just like theology–a Bible-implied word–describes what we know about God, psychology describes what we know about people. The Author of the psyche - God made Adam’s psyche. Man’s soul did not come to us through random evolutionary processes; it came to us by the predetermined wisdom and action of God.

The LORD thought of the soul. He created the soul. He was the architect of the soul. I am a Christian, therefore my system of thought is uniquely God-centered. The Author of the logos - Paul, under the controlling, illuminating, and inspiring power of God, gives us insight into how our Bible came to us. He tells us in 2 Tim. 3:16, that the LORD breathed a second time. His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence. – 2 Peter 1:3.

The Bible is a book that tells us about God and man. Everything we know about God (theology) is derived from the Bible. It is not wrong for someone to write about the soul. However, the litmus test that verifies any author’s truth claims about the soul is God’s Psychology Book.

My Psychologist is greater - Jesus on his part did not entrust himself to them, because he knew all people and needed no one to bear witness about man, for he himself knew what was in man. – John 2:24-25 (EVS). Imagine sitting on the Savior’s couch and being analyzed by Him. He would be able to figure you out in a split second and tell you exactly what you needed to do. Jesus was a Master Psychologist because He studied the soul book (Luke 2:52).

The Christian has the illuminating power of the Spirit of God to guide them in all the truth contained in the Word of God (John 16:13, 17:17). The Christian also has the providential guidance of Sovereign LORD, who is always orchestrating life events on behalf of His children (Gen. 50:2).

Additionally, the Christian has a community of psychologists (God’s children), who are always pursuing a better understanding of the psychology Book, while seeking to make practical applications for God’s glory and each other’s mutual benefit (Heb. 10:24-25). We call our psychology book the Bible. They [secular psychologists] call their psychology book the DSM V (It used to be DSM I, II, III, and IV.) Their Bible has gone through five iterations. We are still working from our first one, the Old and New Testaments.

A leap of faith - The Christian’s leap of faith lands on God. The culture’s leap of faith lands in a big black hole of money grabbing, mostly God-rejecting, lobbyists, who have an agenda that has little to do with God-glorifying soul care. Regularly, I am told by a Christian about their disorder or how a relative has been diagnosed and labeled with an acronym.

One of the biggest weaknesses in Christianity today is our inability to practically apply God’s Word to our lives. I believe in psychology as taught from the Bible–the purest psychology book known to man. My hope is to continue to grow and mature in the study of the soul. I want to be like Jesus. I want to know what He knew when He lived among us and I want to be able to practically help others the way He did.
